We had an issue that occurred this past weekend when the HMC was being
upgraded.
We had a SE from our business partner here doing the upgrade since we
were going to new version that had a new interface.
The firmware was upgraded first and happened with no problem.
The SE decided not to bring the iseries back up and went ahead with
the first step of upgrading the HMC software. The first disc was
loaded with no problems, however when the second disc was loaded the
disc drive malfunctioned. The SE tried to reboot the HMC, however
nothing happened.
After about going thru various other channels which included IBM HW
Support "googling" for answers, a new disc drive was to be installed
by a tech that had to be brought in. Long story short, when the tech
got here the old disc drive was reseated first and started working
with no problems. So, the disaster was averted THIS TIME!
Regardless of the outcome, we still have a potential disaster waiting
to happen.
If the HMC dies is there a way to bring the iSeries up externally
without an HMC?
Evidently, with all the redundancy that IBM builds into other
hardware, there is no redundancy for an HMC failure.
Any one have any ideas on how we can setup another method of at least
starting an iSeries when the HMC is not operating?
Our system is a 520 at V5R4 with a single LPAR.
FYI: The main reason we have an HMC is that we had planned on setting
up an additional LPAR for sharing with a sister company for Disaster
Recovery purposes. This plan has been revised since then setup a HA
machine with an LPAR for each of our sister companies that wish to
join in with us.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!
