hi there,

can someone please explain in simple words (as opposed to a standard manual)
the differences between db2 - udb and db400 for iseries.
as I understand it the iseries/db400 is a simple variant but in what way ???

thanks!

Peter,

There is no difference, only the name keeps changing. First it had no name (it
has always been part of the operating system), then it became DB2/400, then DB2
became DB2 Universal Database and the OS/400 became iSeries (don't remember
which one was first), so now it is 'DB2 Universal Database for iSeries'.

Hallo,

that might be half of the truth. DB2/400 is about 1/2 release behinds DB2
and you have to check the exact differences of both versions.

Hello Dieter,

This document: http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/enable/site/db2/db2common.html
compares SQL language elements for "DB2 UDB for Linux, Unix and Window" Version
8, "DB2 UDB for z/OS and OS/390" Version 7 and "DB2 UDB for iSeries" Version 5
Release 2. According to this table the support in the iSeries version is more
complete than the other ones (with which I have no experience, BTW).

This document does a comparison at a higher level of the DB2 products.
ibm.com/servers/enable/site/education/ibo/record.html?db2400

Version 7 is only used for the comparison of DB2 UDB for z/OS in the
document referenced below, Version 8 is used in the comparison for DB2
UDB for LUW (linux, unix, windows).

The SQL enhancements are really driven by each DB2 product's customer
set, so you can't really say that DB2 UDB for iSeries is a 1/2 release
behind. DB2 UDB for iSeries actually had SQL Stored Procedure support
almost 2 years before DB2 UDB for LUW. Only iSeries supports Encoded
Vector Indexes and it has a more implementation of SQL Triggers &
Functions than DB2 UDB for LLUW.
