I don't know anything about AS/400 machines, but I've been told to get
ours powered up. It's borrowed, and we don't have manuals. It's a
model 270.

My iseries navigator is not connecting to the AS/400. On the front
panel I've done the function 2, then a function 1, then hit the power
switch. The little lightning symbol has turned on.

I have a laptop with iseries navigator installed, but it won't connect
to the machine. I believe that it's a basic problem with the serial
connection. I've tried 8N0 and 7E1 at 9600 baud for the serial port
settings on the Windows side. Can someone tell me what I should have
it set to? Thanks.

You have a twinax controller?

If not before You do it, must connect console to AS and celect connect form
menu.

What version of windows you have?

To connect Client Access Console use standard preset of COM1 or COM2 with
9600 baud.

I don't know. I have a laptop with a COM1 port, and iSeries navigator
installed. There is a cable going from the com port to a port on the
AS400. The plug on the AS400 is not a standard DB9 or DB25 connector.

Sorry all my questions are so dumb, but I really know nothing about
AS400 at all. Every attempt to connect with the iSeries navigator
program gives an error. Right now, it's giving me timeouts on the
connection.

I've hooked up hyperterminal to listen to the COM port as I power up
the machine, but there's nothing there. I've never turned on an AS400
before, so I really have no clue. The instructions left behind by the
consultant to enter the function 2, function 1, and hit the power
switch seem inadequate, because the machine doesn't respond to pings
on the network. I have made the assumption that I need to do something
with iseries navigator, but I really don't know what that might be.

It's OK

But what version of AS/400 OS you have?
When install Client Access Express must install console also.

To connect to AS/400 on com1 or com2 you must use Console not navigator.
If I remember Navigator conect to AS on LAN not serial(COM)

You need to have operations console software in order to enable you laptop
as the console device.

Operations Console is installed as an optional component of iSeries
navigator. But, you must either obtain the install images from a functioning
AS/400 or you must have the media.

Have you considered reading the "Getting Started" documentation freely
available from the iSeries information center on IBM's web site?
