One of our report writers who is just starting to learn RPG said we should
buy this "DBU 7.0" product for about $2495 and $295 a year for maintenance.

Any one here care to comment on whether it is worth the asking price or if
there is a free tool we can use instead?

Here is a link.

DBU is far superior to DFU. It will save your programmers time and
aggrivation. You will have to determine what that time and increased
productivity is worth.

I find DBU in over half the shops I consult with.

There is a freeware utility called WRKDBF (Work Data Base File) if you
can find a copy. The author got burned out by all the freeloaders and
shut down the web site. It has it's advantages and disadvantages over
DBU but is considerably more of a programmer tool than DFU.

By the way, the SOX auditors will skin you alive if you use any of
these utilities on production data. DBU is the only one with any
security or audit trails.

Its not the tool, the auditors will sharpen the knife for, its only the
fact
you're not using journals <g>

If one wants to do harm to your data, STRSQL might be a goot tool for :)

The newer versions of DBU can handle data areas and user spaces in
addition to database files.

So that's what happened to WRKDBF. I always thought it was strange that
the product just got pulled from the net.

He could have at least made it open source if he was choosing not to support
it any more.

We would have helped him package it as a product to make a few bucks on it.
Whoever wrote that product knows their 400 programming :-)

Too bad to see such a good utility go down the toilet. We still use it
in-house.

DBU is good too and probably worth the $2500.00.

DBU is a good product. However, if you are seriously considering spending
money, take a look at Surveryor/400. It has all the editing features
features of DBU, including audit lots, plus a whole lot more.

Surveyor is a great product. Been using it for years. Easy to pick up on
too. WRKDBF is also a really great product, too bad its gone.
